Cause of Penge kitchen fire is still unknown

PUBLISHED: 19:17 18 February 2014 | UPDATED: 09:20 19 February 2014

Firefighters were called to a house fire in Southey Street, Penge, on Tuesday afternoon after a kitchen caught alight.

Two engines arrived at the scene at 1pm and although the blaze was safely dealt with the cause is still unknown, according to a fire crew which attended the scene.

A spokesman said: “It was not the worst kitchen fire I have seen but the kitchen has gone - most fires will do that. There was a lot of smoke.”

The two crews - one from Bromley and another from Beckenham - took half an hour to tackle the fire.

More than a third of the ground floor of the terraced house has been damaged as a result of the fire.

The spokesman also added: “The neighbours were fantastic - it was nice to see a bit of concern.

“They were there for the other residents, offering refreshments.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
