An elderly driver terrified passers-by when he careered into three cars before smashing into metal railings and a brick wall on a busy high street. The navy blue Ford Escort ran out of control on Chislehurst High Street at about 2.30pm today (Thursday). It struck a parked Renault Megane before hitting a Rav 4 car and a people carrier as it spun in circles.

The car finally came to halt when it went through a metal barrier and into a brick wall next to a pedestrian crossing.

Pedestrian Nicola Drew, 30, said: “I heard a revving engine and thought it was joy riders. When I looked round I saw an elderly man smashing into everything in sight.

“The car was doing doughnuts in the middle of the road. As he was hitting stuff he was spinning round more - it was mad.

“It’s a miracle that no one was injured.”

Ms Drew said that the elderly man, who appeared to be in his eighties, was well enough to get out of the car but was visibly disturbed. Two police officers on foot patrol and motorists came to his aid.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Our officers are dealing with an incident on Chislehurst High Street that was a damage only collision.

“There have not been any arrests made.”
