A MOTHER-OF-TWO who survived cancer is due to appear in a video alongside actress Sheila Hancock, the widow of Inspector Morse actor John Thaw.

Janet Tucker, 60, of Repton Road, Bromley, was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2003 and had to undergo a mastectomy to save her life.

She has just been given her five-year all clear and hopes the video will encourage anyone who discovers something abnormal to visit their GP as quickly as possible.

The grandmother of two said: "I felt sick when they told me it was cancer. The day I was told, my heart sank to my boots. I thought the worst - I thought my days were numbered.

"We were due to move house at the time and it was just before Christmas. I played it down to my children - you don't want them to worry.

"I waited two weeks before I visited the doctor myself but I wouldn't advise anyone to do that. It was nagging at the back of my mind. Thankfully I am here to tell the tale.

"I have just been given the all clear after years of chemotherapy and taking pills. It is a relief."

The video will be shown in doctors' surgeries throughout August on the Community Channel and online at www.spotcancerearly.com.

When cancer is found early, it is nearly always easier to treat and cure.

It is thought that at least 5,000 deaths a year in the UK could be prevented if the disease was diagnosed earlier.

Mrs Tucker added: "Check yourself regularly and if you find something that's not normal for you, get it checked out as soon as possible. If you do need treatment, the sooner it starts the better."

Sheila Hancock, who went to Dartford Grammar School, lost her husband John Thaw in 2002 to cancer of the oesophagus, the day before her 69th birthday.

She subsequently wrote a best-selling book about her life with the much-loved actor called The Two of Us: My Life with John Thaw.
