Fellow politicians have criticised heavily Euro MP Janice Atkinson’s decision to ally herself in the European Parliament with the French National Front.

Vince Maple, the Labour leader on Medway council, said Mrs Atkinson, who was expelled from Ukip, should resign over her decision to join a coalition with extreme-right-winger Marine Le Pen.

Mrs Atkinson, who represents Kent and London in the European Parliament and lives in Chislehurst, was elected as a member of Ukip and was the party’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Shepway in the general election until March.

However, she was expelled from the party amid allegations over her expenses and is now an independent MEP.

Keith Taylor, the Green MEP for south east England, said: “This new group is a platform for some of Europe’s worst racists and homophobes.

“It goes against fundamental human rights as well as the beliefs of the majority of British and EU citizens.

“I am sure that south east constituents would not want Janice Atkinson propping up these hate groups in their name and I am appalled that she would treat her constituents - those who voted her into office - with so little respect.”

Mr Maple called Mrs Atkinson’s decision “disgraceful”.

“Janice Atkinson should do the right thing and resign,” he added.

“It should be remembered that UKIP allowed Ms Atkinson to remain a member of their party after serious claims were made regarding racist comments - only expelling her when further allegations regarding expenses were brought to light.”
