Burglar confronted by Beckenham homeowner with hammer

A THIEF has been jailed for three years after he was caught by a resident who returned home during a burglary.

Matthew Greene, 23, of Shirley Road, Croydon, pleaded guilty to burglary when he appeared at Croydon Crown court on December 20.

At 1.15pm on December 1, the 41-year-old resident returned home to his house in Beck Way, Beckenham, and found a downstairs window broken. As he entered the house, he heard a noise upstairs so armed himself with a hammer and shouted for the intruder to come down.

When downstairs Greene was made to lay down on the floor and the home owner called the poilice. Stolen iPods, an iPhone annd wrist watches were found on Greene and he was arrested and taken to Bromley Police station.

A spokesperson for Bromley Police said: “The victim acted in an extremely courageous manner in detaining Greene and it’s rewarding to see Greene receive a custodial sentence. Bromley will be a safer place with him behind bars.”
