Bromley triumph 1-0 but Ebbsfleet go through to Skrill South playoff final

Bromley ended their season on a high, with a 1-0 win over Ebbsfleet United in the Skrill South Playoff semi-final second leg.
Trailing 4-0 from the first leg, the Ravens had it all to do, and completely dominated the match from start to finish. However, one goal was not enough to set up a playoff final encounter with Dover Athletic, who beat Sutton United 4-1 on aggregate.
The match started cagily, and the first moment of drama came on 23 minutes, where Ebbsfleet thought they had taken the lead, only for Ben May to have been adjudged to have handled the ball into the net. However, it took just two minutes for Bromley to take the lead after that. Joe Anderson’s pinpoint crossfield ball was met by Danny Waldren, who hit a sublime first time volleyed effort to break the deadlock.
New signing Sam Higgins then came close to giving Bromley even more hope, but his long range strike was tipped over the bar by Preston Edwards. In the second half, the former Chelmsford City striker had an appeal for a penalty turned down, as Bromley sought a second goal. Jay May, a substitute for the Ravens, headed over the bar twice, and soon after, a carbon copy of Danny Waldren’s first half goal was nearly completed but this time Edwards saved well.
After Ebbsfleet had a succession of corners dealt with, Daryl McMahon shot wide from distance - the closest they had come to scoring. United’s Dean Rance was then sent off for a very late challenge on Bradley Goldberg, while Bromley’s Jack Holland received his marching orders for a second bookable offence, soon after.
The win means Ebbsfleet United will face arch rivals Dover Athletic in the playoff final on Saturday May 10. Bromley finish the season in a record 3rd place in the Skrill South. Their previous highest finish was 11th place.
Supporters are invited to celebrate the club’s success at the end of season awards evening on Saturday May 10. It will take place at Hayes Lane, starting at 7pm.
