A Bromley sailor is set to receive a prestigious award from HRH the Princess Royal in celebration of his contribution to yachting.

Tony Lavelle, 62, from Pratts Bottom, has contributed significantly to several local organisations, and is credited with reinvigorating the Medway and Swale Boating Association (MSBA), which has now become an inclusive and representative body for the area’s clubs and individuals, and is seen as the natural conduit for information and consultation on marine matters.

He said: “It has been very pleasing, through the Medway and Swale Boating Association, to help bring together diverse groups of boaters from rowers and dinghy sailors to hovercraft clubs and groups working on historic vessels, as well as the traditional yacht clubs.

“Partly by running two high profile conferences we have caused the harbour authority and local councils to recognise the importance of recreational boating.”

In honour of his achievements, Lavelle will enjoy a celebratory lunch in the presence of HRH The Princess Royal before being presented with a commemorative medallion and certificate.
