A conservative councillor is celebrating four decades of public service.
Cllr Nicholas Bennett is celebrating 40 years of public service this week.
He is now one of the three councillors for West Wickham and was first elected at the age of 24 at Lewisham Council in May 1974.
He said: “I wasn’t the youngest councillor even then, as Jim Dowd (currently Labour MP for West Lewisham and Penge) was elected on the same day at the age of 23. Interestingly we had both been to the same school, Sedgehill Comprehensive in Bellingham.
“It has been an honour to serve in public office and, as long as I have my health and energy, I hope to continue.”
