» A policeman is following in his grandfather's footsteps by walking the same beat as him - 86 years on.

PC George Bennett

Sergeant Tim Bennett treads the same streets as his grandfather, PC George Bennett, did during the 1920s.

George joined the Met in 1924, after serving in the First World War and in 1943 attended the Luftwaffe bombing of Sandhurst Primary School, in Catford, which killed 32 children and six teachers.

Mr Bennett said: “It’s an honour to be covering the same patch as my grandad. He was brought up and lived in East Ham before relocating to Bromley.

“He was dating my grandmother but she wouldn’t get engaged to him unless he took a respectable job so he joined the police.”

His grandfather lived in police accommodation for single officers before getting married in 1929 and moving to a flat in Morgan Road, Bromley, where the couple remained until his death in 1965.

His grandson said: “Unfortunately, my grandfather died before I was born so I never had the opportunity of sharing any of his personal experiences. But my father always spoke with great pride of his work as a police officer and over the years shared with me many of his stories.

“My father passed away at the end of 2010 and it was while looking through many of his old photos that I came across one of my grandad in Widmore Road, taken in the mid-1920s.

Special bond

“I took the photo to the same spot to compare the scene. Being at the actual spot the photo was taken brought him to life and created a very special bond across the years.

“I’m extremely proud to be carrying on the family tradition in Bromley and in particular policing the town centre.”

In the 1950s his grandfather was set upon by two Alsatian dogs as he investigated a burglary. “It badly affected him and led to his early retirement on July 4, 1952, with ‘chronic nervous anxiety’, after 28 years service,” his grandson said.

He received a small pension from the police, supplemented by working as a lift attendant until he died.
