A FIREFIGHTER has been honoured for 20 years of service.

Firefighter Gavin Jeal, 42, who is based at Biggin Hill Fire Station, joined the brigade in the late 1980s, realising his childhood ambition.

He said: "I've really enjoyed my career so far. Things have changed since I joined - the equipment we use has improved beyond belief from the fire engines and yellow plastic leggings we used when I joined.

"The fire brigade is full of amazing, funny and unique people.

"The people have stayed the same though, and that sense of humour is shared by firefighters worldwide."

Mr Jeal's first station posting was to New Malden Fire Station, where his first 'shout' was to a blaze at a printers' works in Worcester Park. He said: "Despite being the first fire I attended it's still one of the most memorable. It was a severe fire and very hard work, but very rewarding when we got it under control."

He remained at New Malden for 17 years before moving to Biggin Hill.
