Bethlem Hospital in Beckenham made history when it appeared on a groundbreaking television documentary giving viewers an insight into mental health.

Four-part series Bedlam started on Channel 4 last night and looked at the work done by mental health units run by South London and Maudsley NHS Healthcare Trust (SLAM), which includes Bethlem.

SLAM’s chief executive Matthew Patrick said: “This is a great opportunity to promote public awareness and understanding of mental health.

“This is the most comprehensive access producers have ever had to a mental health trust and viewers will see our pioneering services, dedicated staff in action and our incredible patients as they battle with mental illness.

“We are very proud to be taking part in something so groundbreaking and I hope it goes some way to making a difference to the lives of vulnerable people.”
