A bestselling author was on hand to officially open the new £1.5 million Orpington Library.

Adele Parks, who has sold over a million copies of her books, was joined by Orpington MP Jo Johnson on Saturday to open the new building in the Walnuts Shopping Centre in High Street, Orpington.

The new building, which opened to the public in May, has meeting areas, self service facilities and free wi-fi.

Ms Parks said: “It was a great pleasure to officially open this fantastic new library. I firmly believe that people’s lives are enhanced by reading so it’s wonderful to see this facility available to local communities.”

Membership of the library has improved significantly since the same period last year, with the registration of 1,325 new members in the six week period since its opening compared to 300 members last year.
