Beckenham poppy collection box theft ‘despicable’
PUBLISHED: 10:00 18 November 2011
Police have called thieves who stole a poppy collection box ‘despicable’ and issued a photo of a man they want to speak to in connection with the incident.
They were in Lloyds Bank, High Street, Beckenham, at around 9.40am on November 10 when one of them took the box from the counter and hid it under his jumper before walking out of the bank.
A police spokesman said: “There is always public disgust at the theft of charity collections and it is an emotive issue at any time of year.
“However this case is all the more despicable because the theft happened so close to Remembrance Day and involved money donated to the Royal British Legion.”
Anyone who recognises the suspect, or anyone with any information, should contact PC Tony Dobberson at the Copers Cope safer neighbourhood team on 0208 721 2772 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
