It’s taken the town 12 months to achieve the award

Beckenham has been awarded gold standard for its night time economy by the Association of Town and City Management.

A purple flag is now being flown over Beckenham Junction Station near the High Street and Recory Road in recognition of the award.

Similar to how a blue flag recognises outstanding beach quality, the purple flad accreditation scheme commends excellence in the management of town and cities at night. Beckenham’s flag status indicates a town possessing a vibrant and safe nightlife.

It took the community led Beckenham Town Centre Team, a partnership of volunteers from the residential, business and services communities, including Beckenham Business Association and Copers Cope Area Residents’ Association, alongside Bromley Council, over 12 months to achieve the award.

Peter Morgan, executive councillor for renewal and recreation, said: “The town should be rightly proud of what has been achieved here. There is a thriving business community in Beckenham, with the night time economy very much a part of this.

“The council is investing to increase the competitive edge, and the partnership work is a vitally important part of that.”

The flag was raised into position on May 19.
