A TOWN has been named as one of the top 20 burglary hotspots in the UK as police report an increase of nearly 20 per cent in break-ins across the borough.

Beckenham is the 12th highest town in the UK in a league table of the areas most at risk of burglary, according to comparison website moneysupermarket, which analysed 2.6 million home insurance inquiries last year.

Bromley Police say that burglaries across the borough have soared by 18.5 per cent over the last 12 months.

In Beckenham, 25 out of every 1,000 homes are burgled, according to the website figures, which place Arnold in Nottingham as the UK's most burgled area, with 42 homes per 1,000 hit.

Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Properties classified as being in a high-risk area - whether that be for crime or something like flooding or subsidence - could mean the price of your insurance premiums will be affected.

"Homeowners need to be extra vigilant when it comes to security for their homes. You never know when an opportunistic thief may strike."

A spokesman for Bromley Police said burglaries over the last 12 months had risen in Bromley to 2,193, from 1,847 in the previous period. He added: "Burglary is an issue for us at the moment as it is for other outer London boroughs."

In the first three months of 2009, £100 million worth of insurance claims were made in the UK due to burglary, according to moneysupermarket.com, making it the most expensive quarter for five years.
