Versatile defender Michael Morrison is the next target for big-spending Charlton Athletic boss Chris Powell as he looks to bring his 11th new face to the club this summer.

The 23-year-old can operate in central defence or at right back, which is an area the Addicks are particularly light on. Youngster Chris Solly occupied the position at the end of last season while Simon Francis has been linked with a move away from South East London. Carl Jenkinson, the Finland under-19 international, previously joined Arsenal.

Former Exeter City captain Matt Taylor was the tenth player to join Charlton this summer when he arrived on a Bosman free transfer at the end of last week. The 29-year-old is known as an imposing central defender who it is hoped will add experience and leadership qualities to the back-line.

“The expectations at the club are massive. We want to be in the Championship next season and you can sense what a big club it is,” he said.

“I was impressed when I spoke to Chris Powell. He said he wanted to bring his own players in this season to stamp his mark on the team.

“We want to play attacking football, hopefully score a lot of goals and, from my point of view, defend well and keep plenty of clean sheets.”

Left back Rhoys Wiggins agreed terms earlier in the day, arriving from Bournemouth for a fee believed to be in the region of £200,000. The 23-year-old, who was born in Hillingdon, was also wanted by Championship side Watford, but Charlton moved quickly to agree terms with both the club and player.

“I know the owners have invested quite heavily in the squad this summer and I’ve seen the signings that have gone on prior to this move so I’m looking forward to getting the season under way and pushing to get in the Championship,” he said.

“With the players they’re bringing in, the vibe I got from the place was of a club on the way up. And the prospect of hopefully getting promotion is something to put in your cap as well. I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.”

Wiggins becomes the second player to join from Dean Court this summer, following central midfielder Danny Hollands, and both will be granted a quick reunion with their old club when Bournemouth visit The Valley for the League One season opener on August 6.
