THE Pantiles Players plan this year to perform William Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona from July 7 - 12 on the famous Bandstand.

A ticketed event, this is Shakespeare with a modern twist! Set in Italy in the 50s, this lesser known play is a love triangle with a huge dash of Shakespearean humour. Fun and frivolous meets literary virtuosity; outdoor theatre right in the heart of Royal Tunbridge Wells.

In this 'coming of age' comedy we follow the lives of two childhood friends, Valentine and Proteus, who set off separately to Milan to see "the wonders of the world", only to fall in love with the same girl, the Duke's daughter Silvia. Meanwhile Julia, Proteus's erstwhile love, is the first in a long line of Shakespearean women who dress up as a boy in order to win back their man. How the four of them negotiate the impasse between male friendship and heterosexual love is the main crux of this play.

The two servants, the ironic Speed and doleful Lance, supply the laughter and, together with Crab the dog, they constitute one of the great comedy teams of all time.
