BASED on the best-selling book by American journalist John Grogan, Marley and Me is a heart-rending tale about the world's "worst dog".
Disaster-prone golden Labrador Marley is the star of the show, despite being flanked by two of Hollywood's biggest names, Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, who play owners John and Jen. Initially, the puppy is a gift from John's best friend Sebastian, played by Eric Dane, when the pair first marry. But instead of distracting Jen from her longing for a child, as intended, Marley soon turns the couple's worlds upside down. He frequently causes the couple embarrassment. But his adorable nature makes it impossible for the couple to stay angry at him or give him up, although that doesn't mean they don't come close.
The couple's marriage, hopes and dreams underlie the main story, ultimately one about a man and his dog. Aniston and Wilson both fit comfortably into their roles and are believable as a fairly average couple, which is meant in the nicest way possible.
This is a must-see for dog owners, who will identify with the chaos a canine friend can inflict on family life. It won't change the world but it will warm your heart, make you laugh and maybe bring a tear to your eye. Marley and Me is in cinemas from March 13.
