Take a trip to the coast for some great tasting food

Visitors from across Kent are preparing to head to the Broadstairs Food Festival
More than 50,000 people are expected to flock to Broadstairs the Kent coast this month for the popular seaside town’s food festival, which promises to be bigger and better than ever.
The three-day event will feature more than 100 food and drink stalls, drawing in visitors from across the county and beyond to enjoy local craft beers and ciders, breads, cheeses, preserves and hot foods.
Event director Jo Scott claimed the festival is attracting more and more people from further afield each year.
“It is getting wider each year,” she said. “It is quite noticeable and we are really keen for people to come down by train, as it gives them a chance to see the lovely shops.”
Authors Lucy Cufflin, (Lucy’s Food, Lucy Bakes) and Catherine Phipps (Pressure Cooker Cookbook, and Chicken) will carry out demonstrations at The Chef’s Theatre, alongside Richard Hunt from the Devon Scone Company.
The theatre will also include a Cheese and Wine Taste Challenge hosted by Kingcott Dairy, Cheesemakers of Canterbury and Biddenden Vineyards, followed by a Gin Workshop courtesy of The Offy, Broadstairs.
“People can look forward to sampling free wines and apple juice and a platter of cheese, and working out which is the best with the drink they are currently drinking,” Jo explained. “People will be given crib sheets to work their way through.
“On Saturday, Julie, the manager of The Offy, which has over 50 varieties of gin, will offer a gin-tasting masterclass. She will explain the different qualities and advise on what to put in your glass.”
The festival is an independent community event bringing together local producers and culinary talent, and is now in its eighth year.
“We have got a great team of volunteers who turn up each year – 50 of them,” Jo said. “They turn up and will do anything from litter picking to meeting and greeting.
“It is local people on the board and we pride ourselves on being all Kent – we are quite firm on that.”
Broadstairs Food Festival will run from September 30 to October 2, and will be open from 10am every day.
