THE love life of a drifting, self-absorbed twenty-something is captured in keenly-observed detail in this low-key no budget anti-romcom, Hannah Takes the Stairs.

Greta Gerwig plays Hannah, a recent university graduate who is interning for a nondescript media company.

At the start of the film she is dating Mike (Mark Duplass), a messy-haired slacker who decides to 'upgrade' his life by quitting his job.

Hannah soon tires of him drawing the attention away from her by always being the 'funny one' and the two split up. She then shacks up with her co-worker Paul (Andrew Bujalski) a nerdy bespectacled blogger but the relationship lacks anything approaching a spark and is over before it gets going. Next in line is Matt (Kent Osborne) another co-worker who also happens to be Paul's best friend but two don't let that get in the way of them performing a naked trumpet duet of the 1812 Overture in the bath.

Filmed on a handycam with a naturalism that crosses over into naturism in several moments of frank nudity the film has an almost uncomfortable realism that borders on the voyeuristic. The young cast are impressive, particularly Gerwig and Duplass, but things can drag at times thanks to the largely improvised dialogue.

Hannah Takes the Stairs opens in cinemas on Monday.
