“Fast and physical, end-to-end and lots of goals” is Sean King’s description of the sport he hopes will have British supporters on the edge of their seats this evening.

King and Team GB’s men begin their water polo campaign in the Olympic Park with Romania their opponents at 6.20pm.

Their draw in Group B could hardly have been tougher with the gold, silver and bronze medallists – Hungary, USA and Serbia – from Beijing 2008 all to play after tonight’s fixture.

Four of the six teams in Group B – Montenegro are the other – will progress to the quarter-finals.

And West Wickham-born King believes a positive result in tonight’s clash will be just the springboard his team needs to mount an unlikely push towards the knock-out phase.

“It’s a massive challenge for us and we go in as underdogs with little to lose and everything to gain,” said King.

“Our first match against Romania is big for us. Hopefully we can get a positive result and then go and have a crack at the other teams.

“You never know what can happen on the day. The top eight in water polo have been the top eight for a long time but, with the crowd behind us, we could spring a surprise.”
