A donor who has given blood 100 times across more than four decades has received an NHS award.

Andy Adams has been donating blood since he was 18-years-old, saving up to 300 lives in the process.

On September 9, the lifesaving efforts of 30 blood donors including Mr Adams were honoured at a ceremony in Green Park.

The 62-year-old from West Wickham said: “I started giving blood as it seemed like the right thing to do.

“It costs nothing to donate blood, apart from an hour of your time.”

Just one per cent of donors reaches 100 donations, and to honour the landmark, Mr Adams received a commemorative medal.

Guest speaker at the awards was Yaser Martini, a father who lost his two-year-old daughter after a 14month battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

Mr Martini praised each of the night’s donors.

He said: “It’s remarkable -these are people who have consistently been donating blood for over 20 years. Thank you to all the blood donors out there and please keep up the good work.

Michelle Laserna, Senior Marketing Coordinator, at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “These loyal donors are very special to us, which is why such an event gives us the opportunity to say a real heartfelt thanks.

“Between them, these donors have saved thousands of lives, and improved the lives of countless others.

“We hope these donors will inspire others to become blood donors. To find out more about how you could start saving lives and book your first appointment visit or call 0300 123 23 23.”
