Visit to Neuwied

Bromley has been twinned with Neuwied for nearly 30 years

Bromley residents have pledged to maintain good relations with the town’s German twin, Neuwied, after making their first visit after the Brexit vote.

More than 40 Bromley Town Twinning Association members travelled to the town as part of a biennial tradition that will mark its 30th anniversary next year.

Highlights of the visit included a trip to the annual wine harvest procession at the village of Leutesdorf beside the Rhine and a trip up the mountain of Drachenfels, where a legendary dragon was once said to exist.

The tourists also paid a visit to the home of the first peacetime leader of West Germany after the war, chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who risked his life in opposing Hitler and shaped the future of war-devastated Europe.

Peter Brown, chairman of the association, said: “The Neuwieders have always been exceptionally friendly and they have a fond feeling for Bromley. They have a red British postbox in their town centre, a telephone kiosk now being converted into a public mini-library and a direction sign which says Bromley is 641 kilometres away.

“Many personal relationships have been made over the years and there are many informal visits to see major events like the Rhineland carnival in February or March and the town’s annual festival in July.

“It has been a wonderful friendship and we hope it goes on for many years more.”
