A mother was left feeling ‘humiliated’ after she was ushered into another room while breastfeeding her baby in a hospital waiting room last week.

Sevgi Ozer was in the waiting room at Orpington Hospital last Tuesday, September 13, when a fellow patient asked her to stop feeding her four-month-old son on the hottest day of the year.

Defending her actions, the 38-year-old was told ‘not in my country’ by the complainant - but it was the mother who was then escorted away.

Ms Ozer said: “I went to the reception and I didn’t think anything of it - I feed him everywhere in London and have never been asked to stop before.

“I was asked to stop by someone else in the waiting room, they said it was making them uncomfortable.

“When I said I have a right to do what I’m doing they replied ‘not in my country’ - I’m a British citizen, I know what I’m allowed to do.

“It wasn’t the complaint I was upset with, it’s the way the staff reacted.

“All these people walked over to me and tried to cover me, but it was so hot I didn’t want to be covered.

“I was humiliated for breastfeeding my baby. No reassuring words, just telling me it’s for my own comfort, not acknowledging the fact that I was very comfortable sitting where I was feeding my baby until this rude person interrupted.

“Apparently he was offered a seat in the private room, later offered to me, but he decided to come out to bully me and the staff of Orpington hospital helped him to do so. While all this was taking place my baby was crying non-stop.”

A spokesperson from Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: ““We are very sorry that Ms Ozer is unhappy with her experience while waiting for an appointment at Orpington Hospital.

“We know how important breastfeeding is for mothers and babies, and always aim to support new mothers who choose to breastfeed.

“We want mums to feel comfortable breastfeeding in any of our hospitals, and try to provide any assistance that they need in order to do this.

“Ms Ozer has raised a formal complaint to the Trust, which we are currently investigating. As a result, it would not be appropriate for us to comment further at this stage.”
