She retrained as a beautician and now wants to inspire other people to live their dreams

A Bromley woman who turned her life around after finding herself on benefits is now launching her own shop.

Cassandra Baker, 40, spent around a year claiming income support and housing benefit after previously working as a care worker and a criminal investigator.

As a single parent, her situation was particularly difficult - but she soon turned it around after taking a beauty course.

She told the Bromley Times: “I retrained, and within a year I set up my own business and came off benefits.

“I put all the money into my business - I didn’t go on holiday.

“The girl I sat next to on my course - I gave her a job, and now someone else from the course is coming to work for me!”

Her business, Baker Girl Beauty, offers pamper parties, pedicures, Swedish massage and a host of other treatments.

“I want to make people feel positive and feel good,” she explained.

On February 25, she is launching a new shop at 50C Homesdale Road in Bromley.

“I have about 70 people coming to the launch,” she said. “I am big on giving to charity and going to do a raffle for St Christopher’s Hospice.”

But Ms Baker, who has two children - Saffron, aged three, and George, aged four - doesn’t plan on stopping there.

“I want to go even further and want to set up a training academy in the borough,” she said.

“I want to help young people and inspire them so they can live their dreams.

“You can do anything. The only thing that stops us is our minds.”

Having a brand new kitchen is something that lots of people want but can only dream of. Sadly keeping up to date and making our living spaces as nice as they can be is a costly and incredibly stressful business. Even a fresh coat of paint makes all the difference but isn’t easy or quick.

Who wouldn’t love the chance to go on a shopping spree. Imagine being able to walk into a shop and choose whatever your heart desires without having to worry about how much it costs.
