Police were called to St Barnabas Church, Rushet Road at around 8.18pm where the 56-year-old man was arrested for assault and criminal damage. He is currently being treated in hospital for a hand injury.
Five people, including a man and woman in their eighties and another woman aged around 60, were injured - though none of the injuries were caused by the machete.
None of the injuries are thought to be serious.
