The family of a woman and child killed in an horrific crash last year have expressed disappointment that their killer did not receive a longer sentence.

Joshua Dobby, who police have described as a ‘highly dangerous individual’, was handed a 12-year prison sentence on Friday, after admitting to the manslaughter of Rozanne Cooper and her 10-year-old nephew Makayah McDermott.

The 23-year-old was trying to escape police in a stolen vehicle when he collided with the family in Lennard Road on Wednesday, August 31.

Makayah and Ms Cooper were both pronounced dead at the scene, while three girls were taken to hospital.

One of the girls, aged 13, is still recovering from the serious leg injuries suffered in the crash.

Dobby pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving relating to the injury, and also admitted to dangerous driving, relating to a separate offence five days before the crash.

He was banned from driving for 15 years, and will serve a minimum of eight years of his full sentence.

“Dobby is a highly dangerous individual who showed a blatant disregard for the safety of other individuals,” said Det Sgt Jo Densham, from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

“We hope this sentence, while it will never make up for the tragic loss of loved ones for the families involved, will act as a deterrent to others.”

But the family of Dobby’s victims has expressed disappointment with the sentence.

A statement from the family read: “We are disappointed with the length of custodial sentence passed by the Judge today (Friday).

“We came here today to see justice done and in the hope that Joshua Dobby would show remorse & sorrow for killing our beautiful Rosie and our wonderful Makayah – but he has shown none! They were taken from us with still many years of their lives to live and have left our family with a deep void that will never be filled.

“We, as a family would like to thank the police, all our friends, relatives and everyone for their comfort and support during our dark days since Rosie and Makayah were taken from us. The tributes and flowers from Rosie’s friends, work colleagues and clients have been overwhelming. Makayah’s school friends, Bromley football club and Taekwondo club and the wonderful Beckenham & Penge communities that came to help us and to The Holy Trinity Church for their prayers.

“Makayah’s sister, Yahla is still recovering from her injuries. We would like to thank the staff at the hospitals for their dedication & kindness. Yahla, Niyah and Rosie’s daughter Eva will bear the mental scars of what Joshua Dobby has done for the rest of their lives and our family will forever have to live with the emptiness.”
