Officers received information that the flat in Masons Hill was being frequented by men at different times of the day and night.

Police visited the premises on July 15 and found two women – aged 33 and 44 – inside along with items of bedding, massage lotions, condoms and paper towels.

During the visit a man rang the doorbell.

A police spokesman said: “He appeared very surprised to have a police officer open the door to him. He stated that he had come to measure up for floor repairs, even though he appeared to have forgotten his measuring tools. He had no paperwork or pen to record the measurements with and had no work van outside.”

The landlord of the premises was oblivious to the goings on at the property as he was out of the country and had left the advertising and vetting of prospective tenants to a high street letting agent, police said.

Anyone who suspects a brothel is operating in their neighbourhood can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
