Bromley Museum is one step closer to securing a £1.8million grant to become the borough’s “‘arts and heritage hub”.

If successful, it could increase visitor numbers from 22,000 per year to between 75,000 and 100,000, according to Bromley Council.

Plans include restoring The Priory, a Grade II* listed building in Church Hill, Orpington and expanding the exhibition space.

The council was told this month it had won a £186,000 development grant to enable it to work on a detailed plan over the next year, to be submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It will include financial information, a planning application and a timetable of work.

Councillors were due to meet last night (wed 25) to discuss how they would go about the plan, to be finished by next July.

An application to the Heritage Lottery Fund in April 2010 failed. Although it was acknowledged as good and meeting criteria, it was rejected due to insufficient funds.
