David Hickman’s left ankle was injured so badly that surgeons feared they may have to amputate after the accident on Friday.

Experienced cyclist Mr Hickman, 57, of Well Hill, Chelsfield, was turning the corner of Tweedy Road into London Road, Bromley, at around 8.20am when a green lorry, also turning, knocked him off his bike and broke his right shoulder.

The lorry then ran over and shattered his left leg before driving off.

It is not known if the driver knew if he hit the cyclist. Police are investigating.

Mr Hickman’s wife Carol said: “I was very fearful when I arrived at the hospital and the doctors said they hoped David wouldn’t lose his leg. Luckily the surgeons did an amazing job.

“We need to trace this driver to make sure he is more careful in future before this happens to somebody else.”

CCTV at the junction of Tweedy Road and London Road was not working, so Mr Hickman’s family want any businesses in London Road with footage from Friday morning to submit it to the police.

Mr Hickman, an insurance company secretary, has had two re-constructive operations and was due to be transferred to St Thomas’ Hospital yesterday (Wednesday) for leg skin grafts.

“He is so grateful that he didn’t have an amputation that he is just very determined to get back to work,” said Mrs Hickman. “David is very responsible. He was wearing bright clothes and has insurance as a cyclist.”

She particularly saidthank you to Tabitha Lawrence, a nursery school nurse who helped Mr Hickman, and a woman who stopped her car to prevent more traffic from running over him.

A police spokesman said: “Anybody with information about the incident or CCTV footage should contact us by telephoning 101.”
