Millwall must concentrate on their battle to stay in the Championship after their hopes of an FA Cup quarter-final spot were ended by Bolton.

The Lions – who were making their first appearance in the fifth round since reaching the final in 2004 – were stung by a goal from Bolton’s on-loan Arsenal winger Ryo Miyaichi after just three minutes.

An upset never really looked on the cards and the Premier League visitors effectively wrapped up their place in the last eight with a second goal from David Ngog early in the second half.

Bolton scored with the first attack of the game as Sam Ricketts’ quickly taken free-kick over the top caught the Lions defence out and Miyaichi held off Alan Dunne before firing past Steve Mildenhall.

Millwall did not appear to learn from that experience and soon afterwards Scott Barron allowed another long ball to bounce, letting in Ngog, who walloped his shot wide from a difficult angle.

Tuncay brought a save from Mildenhall before the floundering Jack Smith gave the ball away and Ngog played Fabrice Muamba in, but the midfielder blazed his chance over.

Millwall forced a clutch of corners, but did little with them and, apart from diving to gather a low shot on the turn from Darius Henderson, there was little for Wanderers goalkeeper Adam Bogdan to do.

The Lions came closest to equalising on the stroke of half-time when Liam Feeney got away from his marker to deliver a low cross that Bolton right-back Gretar Steinsson bundled over his own crossbar.

Kenny Jackett’s side began the second half brightly as Paul Robinson stole in to glance a header wide of the far post and Liam Trotter’s hopeful punt prompted a brief juggling act from Bogdan.

But the visitors doubled their lead on 59 minutes as Tuncay picked out Ngog, who wriggled away from Shane Lowry and fired a left-foot drive that Mildenhall reached, but could not keep from trickling inside the post.

The mood of the home crowd was not improved by a harsh yellow card handed to Dunne by referee Kevin Friend – one of several questionable decisions from the official.

Yet there was still plenty of time for their side to find a way back and Bogdan produced a point-blank save to foil Harry Kane before blocking the rebound from Henderson, although the whistle had blown by then.

The Lions continued to push forward, but it was far more in hope than expectation, and Sam Ricketts might have added a late third for Bolton, charging forward to hit a skidding effort that flashed just wide.

Millwall: Mildenhall; Dunne, Robinson, Lowry, Barron; Feeney (Bouazza 71), Smith (Wright 57), Trotter, Kane (Henry 80), Keogh; Henderson.
