Millwall boss Kenny Jackett says both his senior goalkeepers have a role to play in the run-in despite dropping David Forde for their FA Cup defeat by Bolton.

The Republic of Ireland international, whose mistake had cost the Lions two points at Brighton four days earlier, was left out of Saturday’s cup tie in favour of Steve Mildenhall.

And Jackett remains undecided as to who will wear the keeper’s jersey when the Lions resume the battle to secure their Championship place at home to Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

“I felt David needed a breather out of it – maybe he could have done better in certain situations but he’s been a very good keeper for us, and Steve had a very good run before his injury,” said the Lions boss.

“I think both of them are experienced enough to handle it, whichever I select, and I’m expecting a positive reaction from both of them. We have to look forward now and we have a massive game on Tuesday.

“We’ve had a good run in the cup and haven’t disgraced ourselves but now we have to look at our main priority, which is working hard to stay in this division.

“We’re looking to get to that 50 points mark and we have enough games left to make sure we have a bright and positive finish to the season.

“I want us to look after our own destiny, and not to be in a position where we’re looking around the country at other results. Perhaps we need to be more ruthless but we have spirit and quality and those things encourage me.”

Millwall, who remain six points clear of the Championship relegation zone, never really looked like prolonging their cup run after conceding an early goal to Bolton’s Ryo Miyaichi on Saturday.

David Ngog grabbed a second goal for the Trotters in the second half and, although Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan produced a double save to deny Harry Kane and Darius Henderson, there was no way back for Millwall.

“If you give a Premier League side a start like that it makes it very difficult to cause an upset,” Jackett added. “We needed something to break for us.

“If you look at the corner count, it was nine to one, but unfortunately we couldn’t get our heads on one of those either, which would have lifted our confidence.”
