The singing group say films like Pitch Perfect have increased popularity

A singing group with members across Dartford, Gravesend, Swanley and Medway, are calling for more women to join by hosting a sing-a-long event in September.

The Marlowe Singers, who have recently been joined by a new musical director, Roseanna Skikun, have stated that films like Pitch Perfect are “putting choirs bacm on the centre stage and growing their popularity.”

The group sing a varied repertoire spanning the ages, contemporary, songs from the shows, gospel, and madrigals.

Roseanna trained at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, obtaining a masters in vocal performance in 2014, having previously studied at the University of York.

Since starting with the choir she was had them stepping away from traditional vocal warm-ups in light of a more physical approach, involving everything from armchair aerobics to poking their tongues out.

Second soprano, Nicole New, said: “The warm-ups can be quite amusing, which is good because it gets everyone laughing and chatting, but they actually do make us sound better too.”

The choir are hopeful that more women will get involved in their Come and Sing event on September 21.

The evening will entail learning some new songs, and the opportunity to meet the choir members.

Catherine Gurney, choir chair, said: “It’s going to be a fun evening of socialising and singing.”

The Marlowe Singers won Medway Festival Championship Cup in 2013, and The Richards Cup at the Rochester and North Kent Festival of Music and Drama in 2016 and 2017.

They are the only chamber choir in Gravesham and were founded in 1982 by Peter Marlowe.

Having run for over 30 years, the choir are now members of the Gravesham Arts Council, and in 2012 they appeared as part of the BBC documentary series, When I Get Older.

They rehearse every Thursday evening at 7.45pm at St Andrew’s Arts Centre, Gravesend.

The Marlowe Singers summer concert will be held at the Gravesend centre at 7.30pm on July 22.

Tickets are £8 on the door.
