Bromley given the Col-d shoulder by ruthless Us

12 November 2009
LEAGUE One side Colchester United proved too strong for Bromley in this early kick-off at Hayes Lane as two goals in each half sealed the Lillywhites' fate.

Before a bumper 4,242 crowd last Saturday, the hosts never recovered from conceding twice in three minutes just after the half-hour mark.

As early as the third minute, Harrison Dunk headed Kayode Odejayi's shot off the line and, three minutes later, Odejayi shook off Donal O'Sullivan's challenge before firing over.

Luke I'Anson's 16th-minute long throw found Warren McBean but, as the striker turned, he was crowded out and, four minutes later, he just failed to get on the end of Dunk's centre.

The breakthrough came on 32 minutes when John White found Simon Hackney on the left flank, where he dispatched a scintillating volley, giving goalkeeper Gareth I Williams no chance.

Three minutes later, Aidy Boothroyd's men doubled their score as Clive Platt out-jumped two defenders to put Odejayi in and, under pressure from Rob Gillman, he squeezed the ball past G I Williams.

As half-time approached, Tutu Henriques excelled in deflecting Hackney's drive out for a corner before the first period's last action saw Bromley's goalkeeper keep out a long-range David Fox volley.

McBean was replaced at the interval by Gareth A Williams and the former Colchester player made an immediate impact, testing the visitors' goalkeeper Ben Williams with two attempts in quick succession in the 48th minute.

G I Williams was not troubled by Tierney's low drive in the 63rd minute. Neither was his namesake Ben at the other end as he easily gathered Jacob Erskine's 25-yard shot moments later.

Colchester put the result beyond doubt in the 71st minute with the unmarked Platt rising high to nod home Fox's corner.

Ashley Carew then forced Ben Williams to make another stop with a 35-yard effort, although the visitors were denied a fourth five minutes from time as G I Williams brilliantly tipped John-Jo O'Toole's firml-placed header over.

Colchester however were not to be denied and, in the final minute, Fox's cross was headed in by substitute Steven Gillespie.

Bromley: G I Williams, Henriques (Dalhouse 81), Dunk, Corneille, O'Sullivan, Gillman, Carew, I'Anson, McBean (G A Williams, 46), Erskine, Dolby (Cassius 52), Subs not used: Manning, Ibrahima, Greene, Kember. Att: 4,242.
