Give these gerbils a new home
12 July 2006
AN ANIMAL rescuer is trying to find new homes for 50 gerbils found living in 'terrible' conditions.
Jacky Carter, who runs Guineas, Bunnies and Hamster (GBH) Rescue in Beckenham, has taken the animals in from a home in East London.
More than 100 gerbils were crammed into five small cages, kept outside under a gazebo, and many drowned in flash floods.
Most of the rescued animals are permanently injured, with ripped ears and missing toes. Ms Carter said: "These gerbils were rescued from terrible conditions and are now looking for genuine, caring homes in the South East London and Kent area.
"Of the 50 surviving gerbils rescued, we do have many lovely, friendly furries desperate and ready for a great new home."
The gerbils include Lionel and Quentin, two, young, black males to go together, and the Spice Gerbils, five albino females.
Ms Carter will carry out checks on any potential new homes. She added: "We hope that gerbil lovers in the area will be able to offer some of these sad and scruffy furries a new and happier life".
Animals are only re-homed to over-18s and a donation to the rescue service is required.
