FBI investigate discount shop credit card scam
03 April 2007
SHOPPERS at discount shop TK Maxx could be victims of the world's biggest credit card scam affecting 45 million people.
The FBI are currently investigating stores in Dartford, Bexleyheath, Bromley, Charlton, Lewisham and Farnborough.
Details stolen from the stores computer system means that every customer who used a credit card at a branch of TK Maxx between January 2003 and June 2004 is at risk.
More than 45 million sets of details from Britain and America are thought to have been stolen in the heist.
TJX President Carol Meyrowitz said: "We are working with leading computer security firms to investigate the problem and enhance our computer security in order to protect our customers' data.
"With the help of computer security experts, we have strengthened the security of our computer systems and we believe customers should feel safe shopping in our stores.
"We value the trust our customers place in us and again, I'd like you to know that we sincerely apologize for any difficulties you may be caused."
Customers are being urged to check their bank statements after banks and card firms found evidence of fraud using data stolen from TJX - TK Maxx's parent firm.
TK Maxx shoppers in the UK who think they may have been affected should call 0800 779015.
