St Aidan’s Group are proposing the idea on land between Victory Place and Carberry Road, Crystal Palace.

Owner Ivan Bateman has been in pre-application talks with Croydon Council planners for around 18 months but says he is now almost ready to submit his proposals.

Other plans for the land include a Boutique Hotel, which would have the restaurant on its top floor, and a covered market, similar to the one in Greenwich.

But despite claiming to have had good feedback from the public about the restaurant, Mr Bateman said the planners were “cautious” about the idea.

He said: “They like the overall plans but the restaurant seems a little out of their comfort zone. They seem positive but cautious.

“But we have not had any bad feedback from the public. They have told us they would like it done in a traditional style but nobody has said “no” outright.”

Asked if he would go ahead with the development without the restaurant, Mr Bateman said: “We don’t want to because we see it as integral. It would be a destination restaurant which would work very well with the hotel. It’s a composite scheme that all works well together.”

Comments on the Transmitter blog, about Crystal Palace, have all been positive. One from a poster named Neferteri reads: “An excellent idea and one that been a long time coming. If there’s one thing Crystal Palace has over everyone else it’s the amazing views and we need to make the most of our best feature.”

A Croydon Council spokesman said: “It is too early to give any comment.” We’ve only had rough sketches from the proposer so far.”
